Harry

Pretty soon it was just me left alive, and the President on the other side of the mirror.

And I was hiding.

All the Secret Service guys were dead.

Or busy dying.

Harry was a determined bastard, an alien on a mission gunning for the President. I fired off a few rounds, but Harry kept moving his hairy arm around while he was throttling the President so I couldn’t get a clear shot at him - Harry, I mean, not the President. I'm not sure I was committed enough, anyhow. I thought about it: Harry killing the President would undoubtedly draw a lot of inquiry and unnecessary public scrutiny.

And maybe the truth of what had really occurred would survive a little.

Some truth always did.

Then it wouldn’t be long before people started to panic. Oh, sure, we could hold any truth about what went on down here under heavy, booted foot - then blast its pretty, fucking ugly face off.

With a shotgun.

Screw your human rights and civil liberties. Your liberty’s been under threat for decades. We track and monitor your every call and communication every day, every minute and have been for years. Be reasonable, how do you expect any legitimate democracy to function otherwise – just let the animals of the public loose to do whatever they please…?

And now Harry had placed me in the unenviable position of having to decide whether or not the President got to live.

So there was all this to think over while I was hiding.

I kept thinking about all the paperwork Harry killing the President would generate. It would draw the wrath of the Boss, who - for personal reasons - I didn’t wanna piss off.

Suddenly more Secret Service agents appeared.

Dozens.

Realizing he was heavily outnumbered this time, but also now in a position of power and it was unlikely he would be killed, Harry released the President. Put his hands above his head patiently.

“You have me surrounded, Mr. Gates,” Harry called.

“It would seem so,” I agreed, crawling out from underneath the table.

“I want him alive - alive, you hear me?” the President wheezed at his men, bent over, trying to get his breath back.

“Gates? Or did you mean, Harry, sir?” one of his men asked.

The President ignored him.

“You bastard, Gates, you were gonna let that thing kill me!” the President yelled, pointing at Harry.

“You’re irrational,” I said.

"Irrational…!" the President cried, stamping his feet and raising his arms above his head and making twinkling, dazzling star signs with his hands in the air in protest. “Irrational…! If more of my men hadn’t arrived when they did, I’d be dead!”

“I doubt that,” I said, taking out my gun.

“What the fuck are you going to do with that…? Jesus, Gates!” the President said, laughing, and looking at the banana in my hand. “A banana…!”

Everyone laughed. His security guys, some of the aides that had suddenly appeared to replace the ones Harry had killed.

Actually, it was a modified Taurus Raging Bull 444 revolver. I’d had it custom-designed, refitted with three additional settings I’d developed: HANDGUN, BAZOOKA…! and, yes, the Banana.
